Lehr- und Forschungsgegenstand der Professur Phonetik/Phonologie sind einerseits die Sprachstruktur auf der Ebene der Laute (deskriptive, linguistische Phonetik; Phonologie) und andererseits die bei der lautsprachlichen Kommunikation ablaufenden Prozesse (physiologisch-artikulatorische Phonetik; akustische Phonetik; perzeptive Phonetik).

Belz, Malte (2023): Defining Filler Particles: A Phonetic Account of the Terminology, Form, and Grammatical Classification of “Filled Pauses”. In: Languages 8 (1). DOI: 10.3390/languages8010057

The terms hesitation, planner, filler, and filled pause do not always refer to the same phonetic entities. This terminological conundrum is approached by investigating the observational, explanatory, and descriptive inadequacies of the terms in use. Concomitantly, the term filler particle is motivated and a definition is proposed that identifies its phonetic exponents and describes them within the linguistic category of particles. The definition of filler particles proposed here is grounded both theoretically and empirically and then applied to a corpus of spontaneous dialogues with 32 speakers of German, showing that in addition to the prototypical phonetic forms, there is a substantial amount of non-prototypical forms, i.e., 9.5%, comprising both glottal (e.g., [Ɂ]) and vocal forms (e.g., [ɛɸ], [j̰ɛvə]). The grammatical classification and the results regarding the phonetic forms are discussed with respect to their theoretical relevance in filler particle research and corpus studies. The phonetic approach taken here further suggests a continuum of phonetic forms of filler particles, ranging from singleton segments to multi-syllabic entities.

Die erfolgreiche Wiederverwendung gesprochener Korpora muss fachspezifischen Evaluationskritierien genugen und erfordert daher eine flexible Korpusarchitektur, die durch multireprasentationale (Verfugbarkeit eines akustischen Signals und einer Transliteration) und multisituationale Daten (Variabilitat von Situationen bzw. Aufgaben) gekennzeichnet ist. Diese Kriterien werden in einer Fallstudie zur /eː/-Diphthongisierung polnischer Deutschlerner/-innen angewendet und diskutiert. Die Fallstudie repliziert die Ergebnisse der /eː/-Diphthongisierung bei Bildbenennungen von Nimz (2016). Vor der Wiederverwendung werden weitere fachspezifische Evaluationskriterien uberpruft, wie Multisituationalitat, Aufnahmequalitaten, Erweiterbarkeit, vorhandene Metadaten und vorhandene Dokumentation. Nach der Replikationsstudie werden die Herausforderungen fur eine Umsetzung der Wiederverwendung bezuglich Datenmanagement, Workflows und Data Literacy in Forschungs- und Lehrkontexten diskutiert.

In this corpus-based study we explore three measurements of L2 fluency – articulation rate, filler particles, and pauses –, both within and between two registers of spontaneous dialogues spoken by Polish learners of German. The measurements are assessed both in toto (as calculated over the whole dialogue) and in parte (as calculated for specific sections). The sections are identified on a quantitative tier that divides the dialogue into four parts, and qualitatively on two linguistically-informed tiers, comprising sections based on dialogue move and task. We challenge the assessment of fluency as an average measurement over the entire dialogue, showing that a sectionwise analysis offers a better understanding of similarities and differences both within and between the two registers.

  • New Grant to Valéria Krepsz (Alexander von Humboldt Scholarship: Relationship between speech planning and speech respiration in Hungarian, 2021-2023)

The research main goal is to examine the interplay of prosodic planning and speech respiration in spontaneous and read speech (both in monologues and dialogues) focusing on the role of the boundary markers in Hungarian. The main questions of the study are: Is there a correlation between inhalation and exhalation characteristics and prosodic features regards to their position (possible boundary or not)? In addition, is there a difference between the patterns of prosodic planning and speech respiration in read aloud and spontaneous speech, depending on the number of participants?

The current work plans to present an empirical set of tests that relate 3 main parameters voice quality and temporal characteristics of speech and respiratory patterns. The goal is to build up a database that includes audio recordings, respiratory characteristics, and annotation files of the sound samples. The recordings and the annotation will be freely available for future academic research.
